CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

HOLMES

I wanted him to ruin my life.

That was the problem.

I wanted Vane Wolfgang to ruin my life, burn it down, stab me in the heart, and somehow keep me from moving on.

Moving on is what got me here: money, the billboards, every paranoid thought that people were no longer talking to me, but the version of me from my bullshit book.

Those demons Vane uncovered in college were starting to resurface and resent everything about my life because he wasn’t in it.

Stepping out of the elevator, I wished I made up some excuse to not be here, to morph my perfectly curated image the publicist had come up with into a recluse who avoided interviews and parties.

I spotted Dyer speaking to someone from the publishing house, with a drink in his hand, no doubt alcohol and not soda like he should be drinking. Suddenly, she backed up and threw her hands up in front of her like she needed to protect herself.

Staying in the shadows, I watched in the distance, moving toward the bar, trying to read her reactions like morse code. Then I finally heard her as my forearms pressed against the bar top. “There is nothing I can do. The board made a decision.”

Rolling my eyes, I knew Dyer would try to milk my success into whatever he could for himself.

As I turned my attention away from them, I stared at the bartender before I ordered a vodka neat with no ice. I knew better to get hammered around Dyer, but tonight was different. Mira was attending; my one ally in this world who was struggling with adulthood as much as I was.

Throwing the room temperature alcohol back, I let my eyes drift over to Dyer again. He was tense, spine steeled in place, and his free hand waved about with his words. “How did you let this happen? Her attacker?”

Vane.

That was just one of the fabrications. There was no Dyer in the story, only me on the other end of his violence instead.

Dyer probably found out Vane was planning on attending. His threats were never empty; I had learned that the hard way.

Slowly walking over to them, I tried to plant a smile on my face amongst what felt like a hurricane of popularity. Something I wasn’t used to and never would be. I played dumb before asking, “Something wrong?”

Dyer looked up from the space between them, his eyes and tight mouth sending shivers down my spine before he walked away.

Sabrina, the young associate dedicated to making sure I got from place to place without smearing the company name, gave my hand a small squeeze. “We can worry about it tomorrow. Tonight is all about you.”

She was forcing the small smile before she excused herself, leaving me all by myself there awkwardly to damage control my life.

I was haunted by a demon and possessed by something much worse... loving that demon.

Sighing heavily, I headed through the opening before I realized the floor was glass, see-through, showcasing a deathly fall right under my feet.
